Applying for Scholarships - Tell your Story!

Jane Thompson, Executive Director of the TD Scholarships for Community Leadership, will demystify how to apply for scholarships. Jane will explain how to approach the whole process, where to find scholarships and resources, and how to get over the barriers that are getting in your way. This session is good for all scholarship applications and not just the TD scholarship.

Let’s Talk About Accessibility

In 1985, Rick Hansen set out on the Man in Motion World Tour; a 26 month, 34 country, 40,000 km wheelchair marathon. The Tour raised $26 million and changed the way people with disabilities were perceived. The Rick Hansen Foundation (RHF), established in 1988, is part of its legacy. For over three decades, RHF has raised awareness, changed attitudes and funded spinal cord injury research and care. Today, roughly one in five Canadians identify as having a disability, and that number is growing as our population ages. We’re working on breaking down one of the most fundamental barriers that people with disabilities still face: physical barriers in the places where we live, work, learn and play. Our Mission To create and deliver innovative solutions that lead to a global movement to remove barriers and liberate the potential of people with disabilities. We believe that by encouraging youth to take action on issues that matter to them, they can become leaders in creating an accessible, inclusive world. You can help inspire the next generation of Difference Makers by sharing Rick Hansen’s story and teaching about the importance of inclusion. Start meaningful conversations about disability in your classroom or home by using our educational resources or by inviting one of our Ambassadors to speak. Continue the conversation by celebrating the students, teachers and community leaders who are making an impact with our annual Difference Maker Awards.

Decolonizing the Calendar: Creative ways to move reconciliation forward

IWhat days are important to you? What makes one day more special than another? As we learn more about reconciliation we are also learning about what it means to decolonize. This word can be scary for some, but there are simple things we can do in our everyday lives to spark conversations and take actions that will create a more inclusive Canada. In the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund’s new Legacy Schools calendar, we removed “colonial” days of significance, and focused only on Indigenous Days of importance. Why would we do this? In this workshop we will delve into days that are important for us, what makes one day important to one person and not another, and why it’s important to ask critical questions in order to see truth and patterns within Canada’s own true history. This will help us move forward on the path to reconciliation. For students, we will make Elder magnets and speak about the special days that are passed down through family, friends and those who come before us, like Elders. Teachers will come away with lesson ideas to do with their own students using the Legacy Schools Toolkits and calendar.

All Means All - Creating inclusive schools that welcome students with disabilities

Inclusion means meeting the needs of ALL students. We all have the right to belong. We also have the right to learn and work together. There was a time when many people who had an intellectual disability, or other disabilities, were not welcome in public schools. Persons with an intellectual disability were not valued for their strengths, but merely judged on the basis of their disability. Over the years, we have learned that inclusive education benefits all students. Everyone learns better when there is a sense of belonging and respect. Inclusion helps everyone develop their individual strengths and gifts and helps us to create friendships with a diverse variety of people. As a high school student, you are probably well aware of the realities and the effects of exclusion. You may have felt excluded yourself at some point. It’s not a nice feeling. This workshop will tackle a number of issues around inclusion. Issues like harassment, bullying, and loneliness are getting students, teachers, principals, and other school staff to look for new and creative ways to make their high schools healthy and positive “communities” for everyone.

Navigating Diversity Equity inclusion and Belonging Being Comfortable With The Skin You're In

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Training

At PRUDE Inc., we pioneer conversations that promote Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). For over four decades, through our Consulting, Training, and Education programs, we have been providing support to decision-makers on bridging cultural divides, addressing institutional discrimination, and confronting barriers to inclusion. All cultures, like people, have different personalities, and we often modify our behaviors to fit into the comfort zone of a specific cultural setting. Doing so has a direct effect on how we learn, work, and collaborate with others. Our DEI Training focuses on building ‘cultural Intelligence’, i.e. the ability to deal more effectively across cultural differences and enrich your lived experiences in ways that promote accountability and responsibility. Learning objectives: Enhance the understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion Cultural competence advocacy Explore cross-cultural communication styles Further self-awareness and behavior identification Explore team-building strategies

Embrace, Educate, Empower: Fostering Inclusivity in Canadian Schools

In Canada, a diverse and multicultural nation, the inclusion of international students is vital for fostering a global perspective and promoting unity. However, welcoming students from other parts of the world comes with its unique challenges, especially in terms of mental health. This workshop aims to address these issues and suggest practical solutions that schools can implement to create an inclusive environment for all students.

Fuel Your Body To Lead - Students

As a student today, you're expected to balance multiple responsibilities, especially if you're a student leader in your school. That's why it's crucial to learn how to take care of your body by getting quality sleep, maintaining good nutrition, and taking downtime. This interactive workshop includes meditation and an examination of your current habits, so you can leave with actionable steps to help you achieve your best both in the classroom and in your personal life. I understand that students face daily challenges that affect their mental, emotional, and physical health. That's why it's important to have practical, effective habits that help you lead in your school without feeling overwhelmed or anxious. With simple habits that fuel your body and mind, you can walk out the door every day feeling energized and ready to take on the day. This is an interactive workshop that will include meditation and looking at your current life habits. Teachers often struggle with their own mental, emotional, and physical health on a daily basis. I feel it is imperative they have effective, simple habits to fuel their body and mind to be able to teach in their classrooms without them feeling like they are barely surviving and having to push through until the next break.

Bean Gill

In her 20s, Gill was working as an X-ray technologist in a cardiac catheterization lab. But, in 2012, when she turned 30, everything changed. She left an abusive relationship, her dad left her family and, during a trip to Las Vegas, a virus paralyzed her from the waist down. While relaxing in a hotel room with close friends, she felt a sudden, stabbing pain in her spine. "The pain lasted only a few minutes, and then I couldn't move my right leg. I was paralyzed within 10 minutes." Multiple neurologists told Gill a virus was likely to blame, and she would regain full use of her legs within weeks. After several months of no progress, Bean was forced to come to grips with her new reality. A once athletic young woman who enjoyed modeling, kickboxing, and weightlifting, she struggled with betrayal by her own body. She couldn't roll over, sit up, or get out of bed without help. She was forced to find her way through an inaccessible society, all the while living with paralysis and learning how to love herself - disability and all. "My life was flipped upside down. I hated everything about me. I hated my life." Bean took her health into her own hands, seeking out the answers and help she needed to confront her challenges head-on. Eventually, Gill found her confidence again. She worked to regain movement in her legs and pushed herself to try sports she never would have attempted before being paralyzed. If it wasn't for the worst year of her life, Gill wouldn't be who she is today.
